The climate debate competition enhances institutional capacities, cultural practices, behavioral change, and skills development. To be a catalyst to promote the mainstreaming of climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, resilience and environmental sustainability curriculum of the Ghana Education Service across all the schools across Ghana.

Debate Goals

Debate Goals Focus On Four Thematic Areas

Students Advocates and Ambassadors

Development of student leaders advocates to dialogue on topical climate issues. To better prepare them to understand climate and environmental crisis and eventually set national impact actions to influence policy directions.

ONE

Schools Climate Change Curriculum

Use debate teams’ arguments to inform subsequent learning actions that will lay the groundwork for implementation, analysis and planning of schools climate change curriculum.

TWO

International Exposure

Competition winners will represent Ghana at international climate debate competitions. They would also attend international climate change gatherings by United Nations representing Ghana’s climate action advocates.

THREE

Resilient Schools

In the long term, use the debate to develop a nationwide resilient schools policy that will address the gaps in climate change, and disaster risk education targeting schools' physical infrastructure.

FOUR

SHS-CCDC Initiative

SHS-CCDC - Senior High Schools Climate Change debate competition tournament is an initiative under the Disaster Resilience Network Ghana – DRNGHANA climate education and advocacy portfolio. DRNGhana holds the strong viewpoint that national dialogue centering on humanity, environment, socioeconomic development and the climate should have a vigorous comprehensive approach, thereby involving the youth, targeting students in schools to have an opportunity to hold firm discussions on it.

Climate Change Debate Aim

The debate competition amongst senior high schools teams is to generate deeper understanding and a broader perspective about national and global issues. Harness and empower students through an educational journey that improves research, information gathering, analytic critical thinking, public speaking and advocacy skills.

Debate Objectives

Conduct annual debate competitions that contribute to student's academic knowledge. Winners will be rewarded with financial prizes and take advantage of international exposure.

Form a partnership with GES to establish levels of effort needed to ensure the planning and implementation of activities for successful debate competitions.

Generate awareness of climate matters among students in Ghana and groom them to be heroes of change by working on climate change and sustainability tangible projects after the debates.
